Balinese Gamelan, Pelog 5 Tuning | Moderate | 3.5’ | 2026
Buffleheads are a small, delightful diving duck that love to winter in the Willamette Valley. Males are a striking black and white with a colorful iridescence on their neck and face. During his first winter in Oregon, Andy regularly observed them in ponds, lakes, and estuaries in small groups, often amongst other waterfowl.
The Bufflehead Social Club is an additive composition in 5/4 with an 8 bar cycle that repeats eight times. It rises in dynamics until all parts are joined in. The score is written in a cipher notation that uses numbers to represent notes. Like much traditional Balinese music, the piece ends on the very first note of the cycle, letting it ring until it dissipates naturally.
