reCycling in Time
Bicycles, oil drums, and electronics | 2’ | 2019
In Andy’s second year of college, he started a minor in climate change studies, eager to understand climate change better and become more civically and individually engaged. During this time, his uncle told him about a live musical performance from Frank Zappa with a bicycle on television. As an advocate for alternative and sustainable modes of transportation and cyclist safety, Andy was inspired by Zappa to try write a piece using bicycle sounds. He visited his local non-profit bike shop with his phone microphone, and he began recording a wide variety of sounds using key cards, metal pipes, and a bass bow. He took all the samples to his DAW and crafted the haunting, mechanical “reCycling in Time.” Andy pours out his frustration and anger at those with power who lack the courage and conviction to take adaptive and preventative measures to make our world and our systems more sustainable.
