At the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, Andy moved home to stay with his family. In an effort to stay active and get outside as often as possible, he had the idea to start a photography project, observing and documenting the growth of all the tree blossoms in his family’s yard. His father, a forester for 40 years, has many species of trees in their yard including ash, crab apples, Ohio buckeye, lilac, honey locus, and so many more. It was a way to connect with his dad and to the plants he grew up surrounded by. Very shortly after beginning his daily observations, Andy also began writing “Tree Blossoms” to accompany a slideshow of photos from his days taking in the minute details of tree, leaf, and flower growth. The music is slow-moving and sparse, as day-to-day growth is sometimes seemingly negligible. Cold spring freezes would diminish progress, often killing eager blossoms that were also sprouting. As time passes, the warmth and moisture of spring settles in, and music itself blossoms.

Over 30 days of observation, I took several hundred photos. Below is a gallery of some of my favorites spanning from early stages of growth all the way to flower blooms attracting pollinators. I realized just how little attention is given to plants during the early days of spring. The leaves of each plant grow so differently from one another. Each has its own characteristics, shapes, colors, and time of sprouting - some early and some later. Their features are remarkable to experience up close. Ever since this project, I can’t help but get up close to tree blossoms each spring to see their progress and simply admire them.
