Bind me in sapphire

Alternate Version: Soprano and Piano

“Bind me in sapphire” was written for multi-GRAMMY Award-winning soprano Estelí Gomez, and draws inspiration from the story of Glacial Lake Missoula — a massive prehistoric lake held back by the Cordilleran Ice Sheet whose catastrophic floods carved the landscapes of the Pacific Northwest over 2,000 years. Andy traces this geological narrative as a personal metaphor, following the path of the floodwaters from western Montana to the Willamette Valley. Like the fragments of mountains carried for miles by torrents of water, the work explores themes of displacement, resilience, and the search for stillness amid upheaval. Rooted in introspection and observing the formidable beauty of the natural world, the piece invites listeners into a landscape that is at once ancient and deeply personal. Two versions are available: one with marimba accompaniment, and one with piano accompaniment.

Original cover art by Andy Lloyd Josten.
