“Moon Meadows (Night)” is an improvisatory, meditative piece written for keyboard and a solo instrument. Composed, motivic gestures serve as fence posts, and the performers are invited to improvise between each motif. Versions are available for solo instruments in C, Bb, Eb, and F.

The name Moon Meadows comes from a road near the composer's home in South Dakota where he grew up. The road offers sweeping views from the edge of the Black Hills to the vast, ocean-like expanse of the Great Plains. The work captures the bittersweet tension between deep-rooted comfort and the quiet grief of watching a beloved landscape transform, as open grassland and prairie give way to rapid development. “Moon Meadows” evokes a longing for the voice of prairie wind — a landscape that, while still beautiful, is irrevocably changing. It is a meditation on home, impermanence, and the complicated feeling of loving a place that will not stay still.
